Monastero del Carmine, whose construction began in the mid-14th century and saw its heyday between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, is located in the heart of Upper Bergamo and is defined as a “cultural asset” for its architectural value and the wealth of activities it hosts. Since 1996, it has been the home of TTB Teatro tascabile of Bergamo. In 2018 Teatro tascabile and the Municipality of Bergamo signed the Special Public Private Partnership for the recovery and enhancement in a cultural key of the Monastero del Carmine that it now houses.
The redeveloped spaces are sharing places for research, training and artistic production, where pedagogy projects, seminars, meetings, performances and open rehearsals with national and international groups can develop. Places available to the city, where cultural participation of citizens can be fostered, generating opportunities inside and outside the Monastery.
The old Athenaeum of Bergamo is a historic building that housed the Athenaeum of Sciences, Letters and Arts for more than a century. It was originally a lapidary and stood above the Fontanone Visconteo, a large water reservoir dating from 1342. The building, with its characteristic rectangular plan, is easily recognized by its facade with nine arches and Corinthian pilasters. It is a space rich in history and culturally active.
